Neon Sign Backers Explained: Cut to Shape, Panels, Mirror and Printed

Short answer: a backer cut to the shape of the lettering makes the neon look like it floats on the wall. A rectangle, rounded, pill or oval panel looks neater, is sturdier and gives room for a border. Clear acrylic is the default finish. Colored, mirror and printed acrylic add a look, but only clear and colored belong outdoors.

The backer is the acrylic sheet the tube is fixed to. Customers rarely think about it, but it changes how the finished sign looks.

Shape

Cut to shape

The backer follows the outline of the lettering, with a small margin.

  • Looks: the most like traditional glass neon, almost invisible on the wall.
  • Good for: script words, name signs, logos.
  • Watch out: very thin parts between letters can be fragile, so keep a reasonable margin.

Panels

A rectangle, rounded rectangle, pill or oval.

  • Looks: tidy and framed, like a finished piece.
  • Good for: signs with several separate words, signs that hang on cables, and desk signs.
  • Bonus: sturdier to ship and handle than a cut shape.

Finish

  • Clear: the default. Disappears on most walls.
  • Colored: adds a block of color behind the tube, good for matching a brand.
  • Mirror: reflects the light for a bolder, glamorous look. Popular for bars and salons.
  • Printed: a printed image or pattern behind the tube, for logos with detail neon cannot draw.

Outdoors

Mounting

  • On the wall with standoffs: the backer sits a little off the wall, which looks clean and lets the glow spread.
